The clients asked for the lower level of their large house in the Boston suburbs to be adapted into a multi-purpose space, incorporating a gym, full bathroom, entertaining space, and wine storage and tasting room. Without the ability to make structural alterations, the presence of the existing structural columns supporting the floor above needed to be integrated into the new plan. The tasting room includes custom millwork and furnishings designed for the space. The palette is clean and simple, with an elevated approach to lighting and materials that reclaims this underutilized space as a true extension of the rest of the home.

This project introduces a garage and outdoor entertaining space to a historic townhouse in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Replacing an unutilized below-grade steam heating plant from the early days of the house, the structure provides for space for two cars, ample storage, a roof-top terrace, and connection to the main house on both levels. Because the garage opens at an angle to the the parallel lot lines, a bi-fold door is utilized to maximize the size of the opening and to permit the owners’ request for a separate entry door. Although the house is a designated Chicago Landmark, the lack of an existing structure permits a progressive approach to the design and materials. Facades utilize an imported roman brick. On the alley side, a large perforated opening and shielded oculus bring light and air to the terrace, while preserving privacy. Terrace and ground-level outdoor spaces define a contemporary urban garden, with extensive plantings, delicate bronze railings, and dramatic lighting. Other high quality exterior materials, including bronze panels and bluestone pavers complete a contemporary, but timeless look. The garage interior finishes are clean and minimalist, including a polished concrete floor, tile walls, and gallery lighting.
